The Long Way Round: Ewan and Charleyâ??s Incredible Adventure
Posted on 29. Mar, 2010 by admin in general
A keen motorcyclist in his youth, Ewan McGregor and his close friend Charley Boorman were inspired to undertake the gruelling journey from London to New York via motorbike after reading â??Jupiterâ??s Travelsâ? – a book by legendary motorcyclist, Ted Simon. Prior to leaving London, McGregor and Boorman received specialist training in a variety of different areas, including the Russian language, off road riding and how to operate within hostile environments; taught by ex-SAS major Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, who reasoned that the chances of coming across gun toting locals during their journey through certain countries were fairly high.
Aside from the physical and mental preparation McGregor and Boorman had to go through, they also had to prepare a team to follow them, including two producers, two cameramen, a security guard and a doctor. This support team were to follow approximately a day behind McGregor and Boorman, in Mitsubishi off-road vehicles, meeting at border crossings and coming to the riderâ??s aid should they encounter any problems.
The team left London on April 14th 2004, passing through France, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic; stopping to view the breathtaking Church Of Bones, just a short journey from Prague and one of the most awe inspiring sights in Europe.
The team had their first run in with the authorities while crossing from Slovakia into the Ukraine. Border guards insisted on seeing the original paperwork for the bikes they were riding as well as documentation for the support team vehicles – everything from vehicle registration and insurance documents through to car finance agreements were likely to have been scrutinised by border guards before the Ukrainian Interior Ministry contacted the border police and insisted that McGregor and his team be let through after a 12 hour wait.
For most of the journey Boorman, McGregor and their entourage stayed in hotels, but as they reached Kazakhstan and Mongolia, the only choice was to camp rough, as the lack of humanity was reflected in the lack of hotels. Whilst in the area, Ewan and Charley took the time to witness the work being done by UNICEF, including visiting orphanages which housed children affected by the Chernobyl disaster. McGregor and Boorman hoped to bring attention to the humanitarian efforts of UNICEF though their travels.
The journey continued with a flight from eastern Russia to Anchorage, Alaska – one of the few parts of the trip not travelled on motorcycles. By this point, both Ewan and Charley had had their fair share of injuries, with McGregor battling irritating mosquito bites and two instances of having had petrol sprayed directly into his face, while Boorman had suffered shoulder injuries which had prevented him from riding for a few days.
The trip continued on schedule, with the team riding through Canada, passing the city of Calgary, before heading into the United States, and through Chicago, before riding the home straight towards New York City. As McGregor, Boorman and their team approached the city, they were joined by a phalanx of bikers – including Ewanâ??s own father Jim – who guided the road-weary crew to the finish line.
A documentary was released detailing the voyage shortly after its completion, while Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman took a well deserved rest and started planning their next trip.
2005 Honda Odyssey Touring
Posted on 28. Mar, 2010 by admin in general
When Honda introduced its second generation Odyssey mini-van, in 1999, it was an instant success. Powerful, comfortable, and spacious, it was light-years ahead of its Accord-based predecessor, and the company routinely sold every single one they produced out of their plant in Alliston, Ontario. But all things must change, and in late 2004, Honda brought out a new revised Odyssey for the 2005 model year. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, it had gone up-market, but nothing drastic. According to Hondaâ??s Yutaka Fujiwara, who was project leader at the time, the company wanted to shed the Odysseyâ??s “soccer mom” image and transform it into a “premium adventure vehicle”. To quote Fujiwara, the new Odyssey had an interior that “reminds its occupants of a first-class lounge.”One of the ways Honda accomplished the Odysseyâ??s makeover was by giving it more power. The â??05 version was propelled by a tweaked version of Hondaâ??s 3.5 litre V6 engine and developed 255 horsepower at 5750 rpm, and 250 foot-pounds of torque at 5000 rpm. This was 15 more horses than the previous model and the upgraded engine was mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Honda designers also relocated the shift lever from the steering column to the dashboard. What was really intriguing about the new powerplant was the introduction of Hondaâ??s Variable Cylinder Management system, or VCM. In a nutshell, this arrangement shuts down the rear cylinder bank during certain driving conditions â?? highway cruising, for example â?? and as a result, gave the Odyssey considerably better fuel economy than its predecessor. In operation, it was virtually seamless, and returned 12.0 L/100 km in town and a thrifty 7.7 L/100 km on the highway. It also conformed to â??05 Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards.Combine the VCM feature with Hondaâ??s patented VTEC variable valve management system, and you had a powerplant that seemed to accomplish the impossible: competitive fuel economy, low emissions, and class-leading performance all at the same time. The VCM feature did not come with the entry-level LX model, however, but was standard issue on the upscale EX.But there was more here than a fancy powertrain. The new Odyssey had a slightly restyled body and came with all kinds of interesting little features, including a refined version of Hondaâ??s third row seat apparatus that disappears into the floor, a second row seat that slides sideways for easier access, a removable second row centre console, a convex “conversational” mirror that allows you to maintain eye contact with rear seat passengers, and my personal favourite, an in-floor storage bin with a removable lazy Susan rotating tray that is accessible from both the front and second-row seats. Despite Hondaâ??s new marketing strategy, soccer moms loved the Odyssey even more.Nor did it hurt that Honda beefed up the safety side of things. With dual front airbags, side curtain airbags for all three rows of seats, re-engineered front, rear, and side impact zones and a rollover sensor that deploys the airbags if the vehicle turns turtle, the new Odyssey led the pack for occupant safety. Needless to say, anti-locking brakes were standard equipment, as was a vehicle stability assist program and a traction control system.Offered in four trim levels â?? LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring â?? the new Odyssey was loaded with optional luxury and convenience features. Depending upon which model you chose, you could order things like power sliding side doors with an anti-pinch feature, a power rear tailgate, power adjustable pedals, a rear-view camera, leather interior, and, of course, a rear DVD entertainment system that came with wireless headphones and a pop-down nine-inch screen. Step up to the top-of-the-line Touring model, and you got a bi-lingual, DVD-based navigation system. All of these features were nice, no question, but what has always separated the Odyssey from the rest of the pack is its performance. Although it now has more competitors than ever, itâ??s still a front-runner when it comes to reserve power and flat-out acceleration. It also came with a level of refinement and build quality that is still the benchmark in this market segment.2005 also marked the end of Alliston, Ontario as the Odysseyâ??s place of origin. Henceforth, they were – and still are – manufactured at Hondaâ??s facility in Lincoln, Alabama.Three safety recalls to report with Transport Canada. One involves a possibly faulty fuel pump relay, another is concerned with a glitch in front air bag deployment, and the third involves a suspect sensor in the ABS control unit. The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has the same recalls on file, as well as two more: one concerns a possibly flawed steering column assembly, and the second, another fuel system delivery malfunction. According to NHTSA, however, these two contretemps involve comparatively small numbers of vehicles: 203 and 1923, respectively. NHTSA also has 133 service bulletins for the â??05 Odyssey, covering just about every aspect of the vehicleâ??s make-up. Lots of structural issues, often involving obstinate or faulty side doors. Nonetheless, Consumer Reports gave the 2005 Odyssey its top ranking in that year, placing it above the Toyota Sienna, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Saturn Relay. If youâ??re in the market for a three-year old Odyssey, expect to pay from about $22,000 to $30,000, depending upon trim level and equipment. Considering its $32,700 base price in 2005, itâ??s held onto its value well.
Do I Look Fat In This Debt?
Posted on 28. Mar, 2010 by admin in general
For those of you who have not yet seen this, a recent German BMC Public Health study shows obesity and debt are strongly linked together. The study suggests that people who are heavily in debt are twice as likely to be more overweight than the general population and are 2.5 times as likely to be obese. The link between the two combines the psychological and social stress of being heavily in debt. People in these overly indebted situations tend to turn to comfort food and often become less physically active. Heavily indebted people are also often more likely to smoke on a daily basis.
According to a report from the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada, personal debt is on the rise, reaching a Canadian record high of $1.3 trillion dollars. More than 40% of Canadians have watched their personal debt grow over the past three years and 21% of them say they can no longer manage it.
A new study from the Canadian Community Health Survey finds 25% of Canadians as being obese compared to just 17% in 2007. This high obesity rate was once considered a problem in only the high-income countries but now, overweight and obesity are increasing in the low and middle income urban settings as well.
Another intriguing study founded examples of how stress can directly affect a person’s health. Initiated by the recession, there has been a relation found between cardiac events and the stock market. The American College of Cardiology reports that bad financial news can be a trigger for a cardiac event. Given an economic mainstream such as the Nasdaq, the health affects of this type of bad news may emerge over the course of a few weeks rather than on a single day, thus possibly resulting in cardiac events.
With all these recent studies on the effects on our health in relation to our economics and finances, it may be time to think about consolidating your debts or at least tidying things up. If you have bad credit, and are overwhelmed from multiple payments to multiple institutions, perhaps a private car title loan can help. Some lenders offer private on-line applications that can be filled out from the comfort of your home, with no application appointment necessary and some even ensure an answer within 24-hours. Your health is definitely worth more than money, so considering a private loan may be a good investment into your healthy future (and maybe even your waistline!).

Ford Gains Traction, But Second Halfâ??s a Blurry
Posted on 26. Mar, 2010 by admin in general
It pays off to struggle â?? that is the mantra of the Ford Motor Co. Its deep cost cutting efforts and efficient turnaround plan have dramatically bolstered the condition of the ailing American automaker. After two years, Ford has posted its strongest quarter. This is a strong proof that the companyâ??s turnaround plan was taking hold.
The pleasing sales figures also bolstered the credibility of CEO Alan Mulally, who said that the results show his turnaround plan is gaining traction even as he warned that the next few quarters will be much tougher. “There’s no doubt that we are making progress,” Mulally said in a conference call with analysts and reporters. “But we still have a long way to go. We expect the second half to be difficult.”
Among the automaker’s challenges are rising commodity prices, which increase the cost of making vehicles, reported Detroit News. Continuing weakness in the U.S. housing market, high borrowing costs and volatile oil prices are keeping demand for vehicles well below last year’s levels, The News added.
Some analysts are anxious because the companyâ??s improvement remains driven by cost cuts rather than new products. “We continue to remain a bit cautious given the lack of new product and Ford’s ability to maintain pricing, a key driver to recent results,” said Robert Hinchliffe of UBS.
But most analysts believe that it is the other way around. “This is the third consecutive quarter since Mulally came on board that the company upsided cash flow, if not earnings per share, expectations,” said Peter Nesvold of Bear Stearns. “That’s encouraging.”
Ford swung to a second-quarter profit of $750 million, from a loss of $317 million in the same period last year. Mulally said that the company will still post a loss for 2007, but it will be substantially less than the $12.6 billion in red ink the automaker reported for 2006. “We made even more progress than we anticipated,” Mulally said last Thursday. “(But) we’re still losing a lot of money in North America. We’ve got a long way to go.”
The Dearborn-based automaker is fervently sticking to its turnaround plan for 18 months now. The plan is designed to push the automaker especially the North American division back into the black by 2009. Ford lost $279 million in the region in the second quarter, but that was $500 million better than the same three-month period in the previous year.
Ford has idled four plants and intends to close 16 factories by 2012. Also, it has eliminated thousands of workers since the end of 2005. While the cuts have been painful, Mulally said that the employees who remain are starting to believe in the company’s turnaround strategy. “We’re picking up momentum because we’ve got more and more people involved,” Mulally said. “They want Ford back.”
Mulally is hoping that applies to Ford’s union workers, too. While the company’s second-quarter profit might seem to eliminate some of the urgency surrounding those talks, auto analyst Michael Robinet of CSM Worldwide in Northville said that UAW leaders understand that it will take more than one quarter’s profits to turn Ford around unlike other online stores that sell oxygen sensor Canada.
“The real chore is to get the membership to understand it,” Robinet told The News. “It’s clear that Detroit is less about moving the metal and more about moving the bottom line. The next contract is going to have to reflect that.”
Additionally, the Dearborn-based automaker is taking other steps to ensure the efficiency of its turnaround plan. Mulally confirmed last Thursday that Ford is in negotiations with potential buyers for its Jaguar and Land Rover brands and said that the company is studying a possible sale of Volvo Cars.
Portuguese Wedding Traditions
Posted on 26. Mar, 2010 by admin in general
PRE-WEDDING RITUALS
In ancient times, the Portuguese used to marry simply to build a family. Given that the parents decided on all details regarding the wedding — including the selection of the Groom and the Bride — love was not necessarily the main reason for marriage.
Everything involved an agreement between families. The Bride’s family would be responsible for the hosting of all the parties, while the Groom’s family would be responsible for giving a large gift to the newlyweds — usually a house. Nowadays, even though there are many traditional and conservative families, marriage is a synonym with a promise of mutual love that will last as long as both parties shall live.
In days past, the Bride’s family would hold the engagement party. Tradition called for the Groom to send a friend or a relative to ask the prospective Bride’s father for permission to ask for the daughter’s hand in marriage. Often, the Groom’s father performed this task. If the Bride’s father agreed, the young man could formally ask for the girl’s hand in marriage, and having thus received the father’s blessing, the wedding was allowed to take place. An ancient tradition — long abandoned — called for the prospective Bride to pretend to be a cow that needed to be recognized by its owner, her soon-to-be husband, before the wedding celebrations could begin.
Considering that the majority of people in Portugal are Roman Catholic, a mass would follow the engagement. After this mass, close relatives would be invited to a small reception. The Bride would choose a “Madrinha” — a Maid of Honour — and the Groom would choose a “Padrinho” — a Best Man. In some cases, two couples would be chosen to fill those roles.
A Portuguese couple’s wedding invitation traditionally carries both the Bride’s and the Groom’s addresses, since it is customary to live with one’s parents until married. All wedding gifts are traditionally sent to the Bride’s house, and put on display to be admired by relatives and close friends who come to visit. On those occasions, tradition calls for a cup of tea and a piece of cake to be served.
Since Portugal is a very conservative country, with a large Roman Catholic population, bachelor and bachelorette parties have always been rather innocent — consisting mostly of friends and relatives getting together for food and drinks. It is customary for the oldest members of the Bride and Groom’s community to attend the Groom’s stag party, where he bids farewell to his single life and his single friends.
WEDDING RITUALS
The big moment for the Groom would take place at the church, since he could not see his Bride until she entered the Church. The Bride’s big moment, however, would start as soon as she left her home. Tradition — closely upheld in small villages and communities — calls for the Bride to walk to church with her wedding party, closely followed by the wedding guests.
Portuguese wedding ceremonies usually consist of a Roman Catholic mass, where traditionally the priest would bind the couple’s hands with his stole, or call for the Bride and Groom to exchange rings, and then cover the couple with his stole, to unite and protect them. As the newlyweds exit the church, friends and relatives customarily throw bonbons and flowers, in lieu of tossing rice.
In Portugal, many weddings used to be small and restricted to direct family, while others would be larger affairs where friends and relatives would all lend a hand in planning and organizing all the details of the wedding festivities. In Canada, Portuguese communities have been influence by other cultures and old customs are beginning to change.
A new tradition involves serving the infamous “Seafood Plates” or “Seafood Buffets”. Portuguese people interviewed, such as Mr. Albino Silva, Chef at Chiado Fine Dining, and Ms. Maria do Carmo Nogueira from the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Commission, tend to disagree with this new extravagant custom. In Portugal, weddings have always been fashioned after European traditions, where food is abundant but not extravagant.
Portugal is renowned for its wine, and the Romans used to associate the country with Bacchus, their God of Wine and Feasts. Popular wines include Vinho Verde, Vinho Alvarinho, Vinho do Douro, and Vinho da Bairrada, as well as sweet Port and Madeira wine, and wedding guests indulge in frequent toasts to the happy couple.
Wedding receptions typically do not have a firm schedule: parties can last long into the night, and it is not unusual for breakfast to be served. Meal structure allows for free time between courses, giving guests a chance to dance and build up an appetite!
Portuguese wedding guests, traditionally, are served only what the hosts can afford. Many families chose to prepare their own food, trusting that all dishes they prepare themselves will always be the very best. Farmers and people from small villages would traditionally serve their own chickens and pigs, as well as fresh-grown tomatoes and potatoes. Each region of Portugal has its own traditional dishes. Codfish is a favourite throughout the country, and it is said that there are over 365 ways to prepare it.
Portuguese wedding receptions usually take place at a private home or, more commonly, these days, at a restaurant. They typically involve traditional music and a lot of dancing, while guests exchange stories about the Bride and Groom. The ancient custom of passing the Bride’s shoe around to all the guests, to receive monetary donations that will help the couple set up their new home, is still maintained today, and guests eagerly join the festivities and participate in this ritual. Traditionally, there will also be a money dance, where the Bride’s shoe is passed around the dance floor, as young — and not so young — men pay for the privilege of dancing with the Bride.
Another important part of the reception is called “Copo d’ Agua” (cup of water.) During this ritual, the Bride and Groom go from table to table to spend time with their guests, and ensure that everyone is having a good time and enjoying their meal; a champagne toast is offered as the newlyweds cut their wedding cake, and offer the first slice to a single friend, to bring them luck. The Bride then customarily throws her bouquet into an eagerly awaiting group of single girls.
POST – WEDDING RITUALS
It is traditional for the newlyweds to leave the party before the end, to spend their first night together. This is not as easy as it sounds: the newlyweds must escape and avoid all the games played by their guests. Their exit turns into a huge competition, where the guests will try to stop the couple from leaving by playing small and innocent pranks such as hiding their luggage, taking their car away, or putting them under the spotlight all night long.
If they are lucky, the Bride and Groom will manage to leave the party without being spotted, and get to enjoy their first night together — alone.
The following day, traditionally, the new couple will visit all of their guests to personally thank each and every one of them for attending their wedding, and sharing the most important day of their lives.
The Problem with Credit Card Debt
Posted on 25. Mar, 2010 by admin in general
According to Equifax Canada, the number of consumers that cannot pay their outstanding credit card bills is rapidly increasing (CBC News). With banks constantly slamming doors in consumer faces, many people find that credit cards seem to be the answer to money problems. Canadian consumers are consistently turning to credit cards to pay for car repairs, home repairs, and even everyday items. The problem with credit card debt is that this type of debt is a lot like quicksand for many consumers.
In the past, most Canadians hardly had any type of credit card debt, but this is all changing due to the current state of the economy. While banks are slashing rates, this hardly ever trickles down to the average consumer that is desperate for a helping hand in the form of a loan. In fact, during this year alone “…there was a 7.3 per cent increase in the national consumer delinquency rate… (CBC News).” This statistic has left a lot of Canadians with a massive amount of debt that seems to have no end.
While some consumers are desperately trying to dig themselves out of credit card debt, other consumers are beginning to realize that there are some alternatives to high interest rate credit card usage. Those that need loans are starting to look towards alternative lending options such as private lenders. Various private lenders are still offering great rates to most consumers – even those that do not have an ideal credit history. In almost every case, this is a far better option than “maxing out” any credit card.
In addition to providing great rates to consumers, these lenders also provide an easy repayment plan. Unlike constant credit card use, a onetime private loan can be repaid simply. Most private lenders work with consumers to come up with repayment terms that both parties can agree upon. After a loan has been paid in its entirety, a borrower is then free from any further payments.
Canadian consumer debt is higher than it ever has been before. While most consumers don’t wish to use their credit cards as a form of loan, this often seems like the only available option. As traditional lenders continuously deny loan applications, many consumers have begun to turn towards private lenders. While the Canadian economy is still struggling to get back on its feet, private lenders are as solid as they ever were. This is great news to consumers that want to gain a loan, but don’t want to rely upon high interest credit cards to survive.
